At this year’s Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) meeting in May 2008, a new National Bariatric Surgery Registry (NBSR), designed to capture data and report on outcomes from different types of Bariatric surgery, will be launched. The registry is a joint collaboration involving the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ALSGBI) and Dendrite Clinical Systems, with the support of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery (AUGIS) and the British Obesity Surgery Society (BOSS). 

 

The key objective of the Registry is to gather sufficient data to allow the publication of a comprehensive report (published by Dendrite Clinical Systems) on the number and type of procedures, as well as outcomes following surgery. “We have established the NBSR to accumulate data in order to see exactly where the practice is on a national level,” said Mr Mike Parker, President of the ALSGBI and Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon at Darent Valley Hospital.

“It is essential we gather as much data as possible and we are delighted to have the support of AUGIS and BOSS. This is not only for the benefit of the Societies but also for the benefit of the clinicians. This will provide us with useful data so we can advise government, politicians, industry and health directors as to where and how the resources should be used. It also provides surgeons with outcomes data to be used in a comparative manner to see how they are performing in relation to the national database,” added Mr Parker. ”We are hoping that the NBSR is going to be the first part of a larger dataset, which we plan to expand to include all laparoscopic procedures.”

The Registry will include reportage on weight loss and co-morbidity on the following procedures:

•    Gastric Band placement
•    Inflatable Gastric Balloons

•    Laparoscopic Surgery

This will be achieved through the collection of data at the individual patient level, which can then be used to track individuals and groups of patients.
Access to the database and the reports will be made freely available to all contributors. All data collected through the registry will remain the property of the contributing surgeon and the ALSGBI.

The Registry can be accessed using a standard web browser, allowing registrants to enter data without the need to install additional software or perform any complex system configurations. This web-based system allows the individual clinician to enter patient information onto a database whether in hospital, from an office-based practice or even at home. Clinicians can add as many cases as they wish and where possible they will be encouraged to put on retrospective data (if applicable).
