MEND

The MEND Programme www.mendprogramme.org is a family-based weight management programme for overweight and obese children aged between 7-13 and their families. Designed by child obesity experts, the multi-disciplinary Programme places equal emphasis on (M)ind, (E)xercise, (N)utrition and (D)o it!. The Programme comprises 20 sessions, which are typically run twice a week in the early evening during the school term and combine practical learning with physical activity.  The course is offered free of charge to participating families.

The MEND Programme combines all the elements known to be vital in treating and preventing overweight or obesity in children. These include: family involvement, practical education in nutrition, increasing physical activity and behavioural change. With an emphasis on practical, fun learning, the Programme is designed to deliver sustained improvements in families’ fitness levels and overall health. It is important to note that the MEND Programme expressly does not encourage rapid weight loss.  It is designed to empower child and their families to make life changes in terms of physical activity, food, self confidence and personal development with a view to managing their weight.

Developed by leading experts in child health, MEND is both evidence-based & outcome-driven. A multi-site Randomized Control Trial (RCT) conducted at the Institute of Child Health, University College London and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children showed statistically significant improvements in all key outcome measures, which were sustained at 12 months.

Details of current and upcoming MEND Programmes are available on the MEND website www.mendprogramme.org.
